Am I Eligible?

You can come into the trial if you meet the criteria below:

  • You smoke tobacco cigarettes daily

  • You are aged 18 years or over

  • You have been diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Your COPD is stable (i.e. no exacerbations, hospital admission or use of antibiotics or prednisone in the past six weeks)

  • You live in the Auckland region

  • You have access to telephone (mobile and/or landline)

  • You are keen to make a quit attempt with Champix

  • You are prepared to receive phone calls form a member of the study team, offering advice and support around quitting smoking and staying smoke free

  • You have tried, but failed, to quit smoking on at least two separate occasions using nicotine replacement treatments (NRT), such as patches or gum

  • You have tried previously to quit smoking using Zyban (also known as bupropion) or Norpress (also known as nortriptyline)

  • You are prepared and able to provide written consent to take part
